The place
Devanahalli Fort is a historic fort about 35 kilometres from Bangalore. Originally built in 1501 by the Saluva dynasty and later strengthened by the Wodeyars of Mysore, it is steeped in history. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan subsequently expanded it into a formidable stronghold.
The fort spans around 20 acres and is surrounded by solid walls, bastions, and a deep moat. Its architecture blends military and traditional South Indian styles, with grand gateways and semicircular bastions.
Within the walls lie ancient temples, including the Venugopalaswamy and Ranganathaswamy temples, both showing intricate Dravidian carving. The fort is also known as the birthplace of Tipu Sultan.
